Growing up on the East Coast as a young surfer, I dreamed of summertime and waxing up my board for the warm summer swells in southern, NJ. Now I am a dad and living 5 minutes from the beach in southern California and yes the kids have a high school surf team.
So a few weeks ago I decided to go see the action at a local Scholastic Surf Contest taking place just south of the Santa Monica pier. Teams came from as far north as Santa Barbara and as far south as Laguna Beach. The kids were having a blast in the small chest waves. It was more like a beach party that an athletic competition with everyone smiling and laughing. But when they hit the water the level of surfing was intense and they shredded the small waves!! Parents and friends were sitting watching and laughing at all the action. I have to admit that I was a bit envious and wished I had brought my board.
